Or rather not. Ive been working with Alison to translate a prototype I wrote for our internal BASE group game making contest. The one level result seemed to have a lot of potential in terms of being a fun game with some nice user creation features. We decided to try and port the mechanics […]
FSKN continues the exploration of game mods/hacks. In this version a multiplayer ‘deathmatch’ is presented sequentially from each players perspective recording. The result is presented as a DVD.
The hacked graphics and sound engine re-interprets the recorded narrative of the online match. Using a static script of events FSKN duplicates the players actions in an abstract […]
This project is the result of my initial attempts to modify videogames for artistic purposes. As it was one of the most popular FPS titles I decided to exploit the source code of the original Quake1 game. In this case I chose to transform the graphics engine to produce a highly abstract environment that not […]
rand()% is a collaboration with Joe Gilmore.
rand()% is an automated net.radio station streaming realtime generative music. All musical content is generated by computer software algorithms and streamed over the Internet. The station existed as a platform for broadcasting generative sound works created by audio artists, composers, musicians and software programmers. The project was commissioned by […]
The BitmapSequencer is a sound synthesis tool that uses bitmap images as audio wave-data.
The sequencer consists of a multichannel stepsequencer (16 beat cycles) in which you can place bitmap bsimages to create sounds.
Each image will generate it’s own unique sound as the audio is produced directly from the image data.
You can control aspects of the […]
A networked, digital art installation for the Radiator Festival (1-11 May 03). Shown at the Surface Gallery, Nottingham (Commissioned by NOW & Trampolene)
For this project the software application that gamers use will be modified to warp the viewers experience of a frenzied online space. The digital arenas of an online FPS (First Person Shoooter) will […]
WebTracer is an project based on the intention to visualise the structure of the web.
There are many applications that analyse websites for structural integrity and diagnostic purposes,
but few reveal the visual structure that web hypertext creates.
Webtracer represents this structure as a three dimensional molecular diagram,
with pages as nodes(atoms) and links as the strings(atomic forces) that […]
An experimental web project. Endless sequences of pages were generated from a pool of randomised data. Extracts published in 72dpi, a web art/design hardback published by Die Gestalten Verlag. Also shown in the Abstraction Now exhibition, Austria.

This project is based on the expanding cultural practice of game modification and the increasing presence of cctv and mass observation technologies. In CCTEX a level from ‘Counter Strike’ (a popular counter-terrorism mod) is re-mapped to offer the user an warped experience of covert surveillance.
The environment that the user experiences is coated in imagery drawn […]
The majority of video games demand relatively high interactive skills from players. However mainstream games rarely challenge the user much conceptually. Conversely ‘interactive’ art often utilises very simplistic forms of user interaction while presenting more abstract and conceptual ideas. Is it possible to make work that can present complex concepts and also allow for the […]
‘QQQ’ is an ambitious project, working with cutting edge technology and contemporary gaming culture. The work has developed from a series of game modifications that span the history of computer game development. Ever since the first home computers played host to primitive games there has been a culture of modification. In many cases the […]

There is a zone where powergaming crosses over into expert software usage. This is more prominent on the PC platform where the two activities share the same interface. The speed and expertise displayed by hardcore RTS or MMORPG gamers is remarkably similar to the deft fingerwork of a Photoshop or Quark power-user. In some RTS […]
One of my recurring interests in programming and games development is the process of generating and rendering terrain. I have looked at technical method for generating terrain and also the unique challenges of making such terrain ‘interesting’. Since then, I have greatly improved my code and Im now using alot of HLSL pixel shader routines […]
