Butterflies

I was asked by the South Bank Centre to work with a childrens workshop group who making papercraft butterflies. Initially they wanted a simple slideshow of the finished butterflies, I suggested a more dynamic method of presentation that would make the childrens work ‘come to life’ in a more exciting way.

To achieve this I wrote a few applications using the Openframeworks library suite. The software captured a webcam snapshot of each finished butterfy which was then texturemapped onto the surface of a 3D butterfly. These butterflies then flocked around the projector screen where the children could match then with their own card originals. I used a modified perlin noisefield, along the lines of flight404,Shiffman,OF-dudes, Ken Perlin etc. The application showed 25 butterflies at all times, using a FIFO queue, but also retaining the scan of every peice photographed. Over 3 days we captured over 300 butterflies.

[…] In a continuation of my Butterflies workshop I teamed up with Lovebytes to produce a region-wide butterfly design project. I updated the software to keep track of over 1400 butterflies that were created in 13 school workshops across South Yorkshire. Laura Mundy and Janet Jennings ran the workshops, producing a vast database of butterflies that were digitally brought to life during the workshops and then stored for later, each tagged with a unique code.   The children were given a QR code sticker to attach to their butterfly. After all the workshops had been completed where was an exhibition at the Millenium Galleries in Sheffield where children could bring their butterflies back to life in the installation by scanning in their code with a camera setup in the gallery. Click an outline below to see the butterflies themselves, photos and videos beneath. […]
